GROSSGLOCKNER HIGH ALPINE ROAD
The most famous Alpine road in the Eastern Alps, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, leads right into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, to Austria’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner (3,798 m) and its Pasterze! On 48 kilometres of panoramic road with 36 hairpin bends, with an altitude rise up to 2,504 metres, you cross a unique mountain world of flowering alpine meadows, fragrant mountain forests, mighty rocks and eternal ice to the foot of the Großglockner.

But it is not only the mountain world that amazes you, but also the tradition, culture and history of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road: Historical finds testify that people were already crossing the Alps here three and a half millennia before Christ. In 1856, His Majesty Emperor Franz Josef hiked to the spot that has since been called “Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe”.

Once here, you stand directly in front of the Großglockner, with a view of the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps, the Pasterze. Marmots cavort in the immediate vicinity and, with a bit of luck, you may also see the mighty ibex.

KAPRUN RESERVOIRS

In 1955, the power plant was completed with funds from the “Marshall Plan”. The power station became a symbol of Austrian reconstruction due to the will to perform of the “men of Kaprun” and its gigantic size.

Mooserboden adventure tour: The trip starts at the Alpenhaus Kesselfall. Buses take you along the Lärchwand road through a tunnel to the Lärchwand inclined lift – the largest in Europe. At 820 m, it climbs 431 metres in altitude. The bus continues up into the charming world of the Hohe Tauern. Passing the Wasserfallboden reservoir, you reach the Mooserboden reservoir at 2,040 m with a magnificent view of the Hohe Tauern glaciers. Culinary delicacies in the Mooserboden mountain restaurant and the extraordinary information show in the “Erlebniswelt Strom und Eis” visitor centre round off the experience day.
